Teacher’s Book Soroka 1. Unit 3.

Lesson 1.

The translation of my Teacher’s Book has started. I will publish one chapter after another when they are ready, and finally I will publish the whole Teacher’s Book in English.

I am doing that because I have a lot of requests from English-speaking teachers.

The Teacher’s Book can be very useful for you, because it gives you the complete instructions on how to use the Soroka course. Please refer to the pages in the Student’s Book and Activity Book that I mention in the instructions. They are available on my website.

Usually I recommend studying a unit in three lessons.

Here we go.

Lesson 1

In this lesson we are learning

Numbers from 1 to 10.

Words:

Один, два, три, четыре, пять, шесть, семь, восемь, девять, десять.

Review / Warm-up

One of the games of your choice from pages 4, 5 or 7 of Soroka 1 Student’s Book.

Reading by syllables

Add flash cards with syllables from new words. Pay special attention to syllables with letters “Ь” and “Я”. Generally, these letters are the most difficult ones. Break words into syllables like О-ДИН, ВО-СЕМЬ, ДЕ-ВЯТЬ.

Presentation and Practice

(Student’s Book, page 9)

Textbooks are closed. A teacher counts students in Russian out loud. If there are more than 10 students, count until 10 and then start from 1 again. Next, a teacher counts books.

A teacher should already have small objects to use in class, 10 pieces of each object: nuts, buttons, matches, beads, candies, etc. Place them on the desk and count out loud in Russian. Students must repeat after you.

Write numbers from 1 to 10 on the board. Students repeat after you, while you are writing.

Open textbooks. Show students how to write numbers from 1 to 10 in Russian. Repeat counting from 1 to 10 in sequence, slowly increasing the speed of counting.

Write 0 (zero) on the board. Say 0 (“ноль”) a few times. Students repeat after a teacher.

Make sure that all students understand the assignment. Do the assignment orally first: Students read words first and point at numbers in the top part of the workbook, and count leaves and say numbers in Russian in the assignment in the bottom part of the workbook. After the assignment is completed orally, students can start working on this assignment in writing.
